Abstract

The mining industry relies on detailed mineralogical information for all aspects of its operation. X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD) is the preferred method for determining mineralogical content, as powder-diffraction patterns are directly related to crystal structure. PXRD can be applied to very small samples (of around a milligramme in size), under controlled conditions (e.g. temperature, relative humidity) and in online settings. This chapter discusses the application of PXRD to various stages of this industry from the mine to the final product. Both laboratory and in situ (online) analyses are possible, with a wide variety of data-analysis techniques available. These are illustrated with a selection of examples that cover exploration, process control and research.
