Molecular Information File (MIF) Dictionary

The Molecular Information File is a data exchange format for chemical structure utilising the STAR File format. The current dictionary defines data items suitable for the core requirements for representing a two-dimensional molecular structure, with limited facilities for describing stereochemistry and the molecular geometry at stereogenic centres. The approach is complementary to that of the crystallographic information file (CIF) but the two formats use different subsets of the full STAR syntax and are therefore not fully compatible.

Supporting materials

The structure of the MIF dictionary allows extended enumeration lists to be managed as separate files readable by validation applications. The validation files associated with version 1.2.3 of the MIF core dictionary are as follows:

• mif_core_bonds.val for validation of enumerated bond icons
• mif_core_colours.val for validation of enumerated colours
• mif_core_elements.val for validation of enumerated element symbols
• mif_core_molecules.val for validation of enumerated molecular icons
