dREL: an embedded dictionary algorithm language
James R. Hester and Nick Spadaccini. International Tables for Crystallography (2026). Vol. G, ch. 2.5 [ doi:10.1107/97809553602060000995 ]

Abstract

dREL is a dictionary relational expression language. It was developed to allow machine validation of data relationships expressed as algorithmic methods in CIF dictionaries. This chapter describes the underlying philosophy and history of dREL, and gives a detailed account of its language syntax, grammar and built-in functions. Examples are given of its use in modifying dictionary definitions, evaluating missing values and use in validating CIF data files.
